Elton John, Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid and other celebrities pay tribute to the late Jerry Lee Lewis at the Concert for Jerry Lee Lewis in Las Vegas
As they looked down on the stadium beneath them, it was hard to believe they were on stage. It was a sea of bright white shirts, black pants, red shoes and black socks. The men and women looked like the Beatles crossed with the Dead in a Grateful Dead tribute band. On stage were Jerry Lee Lewis, with his wife, Ann, and children. The only other people at the concert who had paid to attend were some of Lewis’s friends and family.
And so they played a concert only Lewis could have dreamed of, performed songs the man who created the music that brought the Beatles to their first No. 1 single would have loved, sang love songs filled with sadness and told a story of growing up with a father’s love and loss and the love of Jesus Christ.
When it was all over, the whole theater was filled with music, as they all sang along to a song, a prayer and a gospel song. As they moved toward the front to leave, Lewis leaned into Ann and whispered: “You’ll see another kind of light when you get to heaven.”
That night, Lewis’s legacy has been told.
